Day 9- Onto the UK


Day 9- August 4th

We arrived at London Gatwick airport around 11:10am. Jumped on a bus and headed for Ardingly.

This is where we met up with Paul Willis. Wow what a site!! The buildings and landscape at Ardingly are beautiful. I'm talking incredible!!!

After relaxing a little while the kids decided to play some games that involved using a tennis ball.

At 3pm Paul , Coaches and players jumped on the bus and headed for Oval In Kennington, London to watch a Cricket match. The Oval, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Kia Oval, is an international cricket ground in Kennington,  in the London Borough of Lambeth, South London. It's the home of the Surrey Cricket club. The Oval holds 25,500 people.

We arrived at the Oval around 5:30pm. The match was Surrey vs Glamorgan. We arrived in time to watch the teams warm up. STE educated us all on the rules of the game. The boys really liked the food choices at the Oval. Lots of fried food just like the USA.

The match started at 7pm. As the matched moved on the boys were really getting into it. It was a great match . Trailing 181 to 175 Surrey had one ball left to hit. The batter needed to hit it into the stands to tie the game. In Cricket, a ball hit into the stands is worth 6 points. The bowler through the ball and the batter tried his best to hit one into the stands, unfortunately he failed. The final score was in favor of Glamorgan 181 to 175 Surrey. What a great event!

Back on the bus and heading for Lancing College. The bus arrived at Lancing just after midnight.
Very tired we unloaded the bus, gave the boys their room assignments and went to bed.

Day 2: This place is beautiful

Day 2 kicked off with a visit into the center of Amsterdam. It is an amazing city with stunning architecture. It is very fast paced, though! Lots of people, bikes and trains rolling through the streets. We met outside of the Royal Palace of Amsterdam (pictured above) where we took some pictures and got ready to split up for some sightseeing. Before we spit up we were approached by a young opera singer who was doing a challenge with the group she was with. She had to crowd surf while singing and she asked our boys to play the crowd and we happily played along. Unfortunately I can't post the video but there is a screenshot below. It was a really funny experience for the boys and the hundreds of people that stopped to watch We then split off into our groups to go around and check out the shops. Day 5: Cheese, Wooden shoes, and Pizza

After a hard fought weekend of baseball, a relaxing day of sightseeing is exactly what the boys needed. As a reward the boys were able to sleep in until 8 (sleep in....HA!). We had breakfast together as a team and got on the bus to head to Volendam.  Volendam is a Dutch town on the Markermeer Lake, northeast of Amsterdam. It’s known for its colorful wooden houses and the old fishing boats in its harbor, which is lined with seafood vendors.  Our trip into the city started at the Henri Willig Cheese Factory. We were given a quick tour in the area where they make the cheese. While there the tour guide explained to us the process of making the cheese, how long it takes, and the various types of cheeses they make in the factory. After the demonstration we were able to go into the gift shop where the boys could sample all of the cheeses made in the factory and also buy different types of cheeses and other snacks.
